An Introduction to Philosophy will meet on the following dates:

January 10th & 24th.   February 7th & 21st.   March 13th.

Continuing Philosophy will meet on the following dates:

January 17th & 31st.   February 14th.   March 6th & 20th.

There will be no meeting on February 28th as I will be away on holiday.

The final week of the Spring Term, March 27th, is currently free and how it is to be used is open to negotiation.

Although the courses officially end at Easter I am happy to continue into the Summer Term for an additional 4 weeks (2 sessions for each course) if there are enough members who wish to do so. I will canvas opinion on this early in the new year.

Philosophy Courses 2011-12

2 courses are offered this year - An Introduction to Philosophy and Continuing Philosophy.

An Introduction to Philosophy is designed mainly for those people who are new to philosophy. It consists of 12 sessions altogether. Sessions will take place at approximately fortnightly intervals and will be held on Tuesday Afternoons at St.John from 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.

Continuing Philosophy is designed mainly for those people who did the introductory course last year but newcomers are also welcome to join. It also consists of 12 sessions altogether. Sessions will take place at approximately fortnightly intervals and will be held on Tuesday Afternoons at St.John from 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.

The sessions for An Introduction to Philosophy and Continuing Philosophy are held on the same day and at the same time but on alternate weeks, so anyone who wishes to sign up for both courses may do so.

The pages of this website provide more information for those who require it:

What is Philosophy ? gives a brief explanation of what philosophy is about.

An Introduction to Philosophy gives details of the topics which were covered by the same course last year. This year’s programme will be more or less the same. Notes and readings will be added as the course progresses.

Continuing Philosophy gives some details of the topics which will be covered in the first part of this year’s course. Notes and readings will be added as the course progresses.

Notice Board gives a list of books which members have found useful in the past.

Archive is designed to provide additional reading which will be added as the year progresses.

Reference contains an explanation of some important philosophical terms which we may come across.

Climate Change Ethics contains a piece which I wrote a couple of years ago when we were studying this topic. I have left it on the website so that those who are interested can see what an extended philosophical essay looks like.
